The flood of 2012
The level of rain in this region is quite low. However, it is quite unfortunate that in 2012 rain fell for more than three days. February and March 2012 is not a memorable year for many residents of Leigh Creek. Heavy rains, which have never been experienced in that region, wreak havoc because of flooding.
The rain that led to the flooding fell for three straight days nonstop at about 260mm. The continuous rainfall caused the town to be placed under isolation because the Creek was run. The dams that supply water in the region were also full. This also added to the flooding. There was no place for the water to escape causing the water to flood the road. Many properties were damaged as a result of the flooding.
It is as a result of this 2012 incident that many people, especially tourists, are sceptical of visiting Leigh Creek. This is due to fear that the flooding could occur again, making many people afraid of the loss of life and property. This is quite true. Nobody wants to be trapped in a stranger’s land without any means of reaching out to their loved ones.
The best time to visit Leigh Creek is between March and November. During this period, the climate is always favourable; however, the rain might also take another turn. No one can predict the perfect weather. However, preparation can only be made towards avoiding such things from happening again. The Leigh Creek government has put in place measures to prevent the flooding from happening again.
Again, people residing in the Creek area have been practising good environmental hygiene. Refuses are to be dumped in the appropriate places. This has been enforced perfectly because hardly will you see anyone litter the environment. There is adequate punishment put in place for such offenders. It also, in a way, helped society to be clean and well organised.
The administrative body also saw to it that the proper drainage system is built to prevent flooding. They also created a proper channel for the flow of water. This has been seen as the best possible way to prevent the natural disaster from reoccurring again.
You should not be afraid to visit this tourist centre because various precautionary measures have been put in place to prevent such from happening again. As stated earlier, the precautionary measures include a proper waste management system, proper drainage system, adequate channels for the free passage of water, etc.
Your plan of visiting Leigh Creek should not be prevented by the 2012 flooding. Leigh Creek is a great centre to visit during your vacation with your family. There are also various parks where your children can also hang out and socialise with other children.
The flooding has happened, and it has become a thing of the past. We have learnt from our mistakes, and we are creating a better future.
