A brief history of Leigh Creek
At 600km North of Adelaide, Leigh Creek is most times regarded as an oasis in a desert. Based on the area’s climatic conditions, the best time to visit the site should be around early March to late November when the weather is still warm.
There is no historical background without making mention of the Yulu’s coal mine, which has been in existence the foundation of the Creek. This coal mine was created by a fire lit to burn thousands of trees. The residue of the coal still exists to date.
This site was first called Leigh Creek in 1856 by Harry Leigh, whom many refer to as the first settler.
In the early 90s, many people settled in this area in search of coal. It was not until 1880 that development was made and coal was discovered in the Creek, and mining became operational in the area. Large-scale mining began in 1940. Development did not reach this area till the mid-50s when electricity was fully supplied and generated in the area.
Leigh Creek is notable for these unique trees which grow in the area. Trees are so unique in this area that most of Leigh Creek streets are named after them. Not less than 300,000 native trees exist in this region. At the beginning of life in this area, the main source of water is from the Sliding Rock. It was not until 1945 that the Aroona Dam was built. Other sources of water are the nearby dams. The supply of water in this area is quite low due to the low level of rainfall.
